I am thrilled to be a guest designer on the One Room Challenge. This is an opportunity given to me and other designers to make our own homes beautiful in a 6 week timespanc.
Twenty Designers are invited to be featured to start and finish a room in their own homes Thanks to Linda Weinstein and Calling it Home the event is now in its 19th Season. This is my third time participating. Thanks also to Better Homes and Gardens for being the media sponsor.

What happened in my house this week?
Here we are at week 3 or is it month 3 for me? I am really tired of a mess now. This week we had our ugly builder grade beige tile demo’d and I had a fit. The tile was in the kitchen but also in the entry way. The dust was incredible and the tile people not all that concerned about it. I have to say that this whole flooding thing has not been very good for my emotional well-being or my mood. I yelled at the insurance company and found out we could have relocated long ago. Nobody needs to live in the dust! I don’t think I was very nice about the whole thing.
Remember this floor?
who were the helpers?
I cannot thank my sponsors Beyondfloors.net and Emser tile enough! It was shocking to have my house flooded. Finding a sponsor was incredibly good news since our insurance was not paying to replace the kitchen floors, only the carpet in the living room and dining room. (We did not reinstall carpet as we wanted something waterproof).

why did I choose this floor tile
I chose a fun Mediterranean looking tile for the kitchen floor and it makes me so happy just to look at it!. The tile is called Nostalgia by Emser Tile. The design harkens back to when skilled artisans hand painted tiles. The 18”x18” pre-scored size combines old world craftmanship with modern technology providing an easy-to- install designer look. Nostalgia is available in 4 colorways. Look at the others colors here I LOVE IT!
why we chose to do the floor first
There is always a choice to do the flooring after the cabinets or before. We are doing custom cabinets so I wanted to do the flooring first so there would be no problem with appliances fitting because of how much the floor would be raised
THE CRAZY BEHIND RIPPING OUT TILE
Let me explain to you that you have to have a major desire to improve a space if you pull up tile and you still live in the house. Traumatizing is not even the word for this part of a remodel. I am truly getting so much respect for some of my past clients although most of the work I have done for them has been in second homes.
Well it is ta-ta until next week when we get the kitchen built on site!
That tile is SO pretty, Ilse! And SO perfect for you – I can see why it makes you happy just to look at it!
What a great project it’s turning out to be…..such beautiful tile!!
This floor will make you smile every single day!
Oh Ilse, I LOVE the floor tile! I can see why this tile makes you happy. It truly puts a smile on my face too.
Looking forward to next week and the progress you make!
